This is the first Update in three weeks. While the week of March 29 had little news, April 5’s update was upended due to power outages, computer issues and even an earthquake. Only in Cavendish does one experience a major snowstorm, town wide power outage, an earthquake and an eclipse within five days.
Today’s post is a bit of a catch up but it’s also a reminder that the 14th Annual Tag Sale will once again take place in July. The re vote of the GMUSD budget is April 23, with absentee ballots available at the town office. Note that there is an important discussion taking place on April 24 regarding proposed draft regs for Cavendish Subdivisions.
We hoped you enjoyed Monday’s eclipse. Please note The American Astronomical Society (AAS) says modern eclipse glasses do not expire. If the glasses were compliant with the ISO 12312-2, and have no punctures, scratches or tears, and the filters/lenses remain attached to the frames, they will last. Older eclipse glasses used materials that degraded over time, so they were often printed with a 3-year expiration period. That is no longer true. One manufacturer, American Paper Optics, still prints the 3-year expiration warning out of an abundance of caution.
What to do with your Eclipse glasses:
• Donate them at one of the following locations: Cavendish or Fletcher Libraries; Benson Chevrolet; M&T Bank.
• Donate to Astronomers Without Borders; Eclipse Glasses USA. The Montshire Museum is collecting glasses for Astronomers Without Borders. Ship by August 1 to Eclipse Glasses USA, LLC; PO Box 50571; Provo, UT 84605
• Recycle by removing the lenses and recycling the cardboard

1. CAVENDISH 14th ANNUAL TOWN WIDE TAG SALE: It’s hard to believe that this will be the 14th year of what started out as a special event for the town’s 250th anniversary. Given what 2023 was like, to say nothing of the rain that impacted last year’s sale, we hope to make it bigger and better this year.
As you begin spring cleaning, put aside items for the Annual Town Wide Tag Sale, which will take place on July 27 (Saturday) from 9-2. Space is available for free on both of the town greens for Cavendish residents, property owners and businesses, along with non-profit groups that serve the community.

2. RE VOTING THE GMUSD BUDGET: A public information hearing on the Green Mountain Unified School District (GMUSD) budget will take place on April 18, 6 pm at the Green Mountain Union High School – Library. This meeting is also available via Zoom: https://trsu.zoom.us/j/87339978551 Phone: 646-876-9923
Voting will be on April 23, 2024 on the GMUSD budget, which is $17,007,468.00. The equalized per student cost will be $12,719.49. Ballots are currently available at the Town Office.
3. DISCUSSION: CAVENDISH PROPOSED DRAFT SUBDIVISION REGS: Come join the Cavendish planning commission for an open discussion on the proposed draft subdivision regulations. Copies are available on the town website or the town office. There will be pizza and other food available. Come share your thoughts on this important topic on Wednesday April 24, 5:30 pm at the Proctorsville Fire Hall.
4. CAVENDISH COMMUNITY CALENDAR CONTEST: For more than 20 years the Cavendish Community and Conservation Association has produced a community calendar featuring photographs taken by Cavendish/Proctorsville residents of Cavendish/Proctorsville scenes.
The theme for 2025 is “Cavendish: Resilient and Strong.” What images come to mind when you think of the strength and beauty in our community? How do you see nature renew itself? Photos of landscapes, buildings, people, and animals within Cavendish will be considered for publication.
All photographs will be displayed in the Cavendish Fletcher Community Library; the public will be able to vote on their favorites during the last week of May. Whether you are a full-time or a part-time resident, and even if you have never submitted pictures to the calendar before, this is your chance to capture a sight that you appreciate and share it with the community. The usual submissions are from ordinary people who find beauty in ordinary places. The deadline for entries is May 21. FMI: Application procedures and rules are available at the CCCA website. • Go Fund Me for Willy Johnson: Cavendish’s Transfer Station Willy is in the hospital with pneumonia, congestive heart failure and collapsed lungs. A Go Fund Me page has been set up to help with medical expenses.
• Free AHA HeartSave Community CPR and First Aid: The American Heart Association Heartsave CPR Course is designed for community members who need to know how to perform CPR in a variety of community settings. After successfully completing the course you will receive a 2 year CPR Certification. • CHS April Briefs: The latest on the Cavendish Historical Society, including an upcoming events calendar, is now available at the CHS Blog.
• New name, mascot for GM? Not yet, but Principal Broadley is developing a plan: In an interview in late March, Broadley outlined the beginnings of a plan to come up with a new name for the schools sports team. He said it will “heavily involve kids, families and staff and possibly the community.” He clarified that that would mean the “wider community in the district,” the elementary schools and all towns — Andover, Baltimore, Cavendish, Chester, Ludlow and Mt. Holly. While Broadley has “no specific timeline,” after the April break (April 8-12) he intends to survey GM students and its student government about “possible rebranding and ideas. There are many more names that people could throw out there that would not impact the (state and supervisory union) guidelines that we have to follow.” Chester Telegraph
• TRSU Board approves revised budget: The Two Rivers Supervisory Union (TRSU) Board has approved the revised school budget of $10,897,278, representing a 13.65% increase from last year’s budget. Down from the $11,047,939 that voters rejected after Town Meeting Day, the new budget will be brought separately before the Green Mountain Unified School District (GMUSD) and Ludlow Mount Holly Union Unified School District (LMHUUSD) boards, before a public informational meeting and its return to the ballot later this spring.
