2. RT 131 CONSTRUCTION/BRIDGE @ EXIT 8 UPDATE-7/8: Please note that 131 is a state project. Direct questions and concerns to Natalie Boyle at Vtrans802-855-3893 or nboyle@eivtech.com
The section of 131 through Cavendish Village is still not paved and, while graded earlier in the week, will have much of last weekend’s issues due to the continuing rain.
The updates below are from Vtrans:
Route 131: The contractor will continue to pave with cold mix paving into next week. Paving may potentially be done by the end of next week, depending on weather and surface conditions. Temporary lines will be placed on paved areas at the end of each day of paving. The traveling public should expect delays in the vicinity of paving operations. The roadway will not have lines on the gravel surfaces to delineate travel lanes. A rough roadway should be expected in some areas within the project limits.
Bridge/Exit 8 on 91: The bridge deck has been poured and is now in the curing process while the concrete hardens to the necessary strength. The contractor will continue working on pier repairs along VT 131 next week. Shoulder closures will be in place. On the interstate, crews will be working on the approaches to the bridge, tying rebar for the barrier and the bridge curb. Motorists will encounter a lane reduction in the Northbound and Southbound lanes of the interstate. Travel will be reduced to one lane of travel within the construction zone. Traffic has been switched to the crossovers on the interstate. This pattern will remain in place throughout the construction season, into the Fall. Width restrictions are in place on both the Northbound and Southbound lanes of travel. Lane width in each direction is 14 feet maximum. There are no width restrictions for the on and off ramps at Exit 8.

So many have shared such wonderful stories of Jim on Facebook. Two favorite quotes from Jim, the first of which he made during the 95th birthday parade, “Live long enough and they make you a hero.” The second was regarding his long marriage “Even a bad day with your partner is better than a day without him or her.” Jim’s obituary is available online and an online guest book can be found at www.cabotfh.com
• Black River Water Testing: Given the considerable rain and the posting of a flood watch for today, the Black River would not be recommended for recreating this weekend. The recommendation is to stay out of the water for 24 hours after a heavy rain or any time it appears cloudy. Test results are posted to Is it Clean?
• TRSU Board Look at Their Roles During Retreat: The message the GMUSD board continues to receive is that the school board’s role is to hire experts to run the school and then step aside and let them do their job. This is similar to the presentation Susan Holson, VT School Board’s Association, gave to the board in 2019. Chester Telegraph
4. COVID UPDATE: Delta is now the leading variant of Covid as it continues to spread. The current vaccines used in the US (Pfizer, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson) offer protection against this variant. National data indicates 99% of those getting Covid and dying are people who are not vaccinated. These points were stressed by Dr. Levine at Tuesday’s press conference and he asked that families encourage non vaccinated members to be vaccinated in order to provide protection so we are in the best possible shape heading into fall and winter.
Cases remains very low in VT, and there have been no “clusters” or “outbreaks.” Similar to national data, those becoming infected have not been vaccinated. According to the July 6 modeling data, VT has seen 26 consecutive days of single digit cases, averaging less that 4 cases a day over the last seven days. Full reopening in VT and in New England has not increased case counts. However, for our region, which includes New York, there has been a slight uptick in cases in the past week. NY went from 2,277 cases the week of June 22-28 to 2,736 for the week of June 29-July 5.
Levine noted on Tuesday that fewer than 5% of unvaccinated Vermonters are truly resistant to getting vaccinated. Most fall in the “wait-and-see” category or haven’t yet lined up an appointment for various reasons.
To help make it easier to be vaccinated, the free Covid vaccine is now available at the Rite Aid Pharmacy in Ludlow (228-8477) as well as the Ludlow Health Center (226-8867). LHC will also provide Covid testing for those with symptoms.
Those needing a test for camp or work, will need to go to one of the state testing sites. The closest sites are Springfield, 51 Pearl St., Level 2, Mon-Wed. 8-11 am and Sat 8-noon; or Rutland Regional Medical Center Mon-Fri 9-10 and 4-5:2 pm and Sat. 10-11:50.
