Town of Cavendish Notice to Taxpayers-Grievance Day June 9: The following legal notice appeared in the Vermont Journal, the town’s paper of legal record. Agreeably to the provisions of Title 32 Vermont Statutes Annotated, Section 4111, notice is hereby given that the undersigned Listers, within and for the Town of Cavendish have this day completed the Abstract of Individual Lists of persons, co-partnerships, associations, and corporations owning taxable property in said town on the first day of April 2017; that they have this day lodged the same in the office of the Clerk of said town for the inspection of taxpayers; that on the 9th day of June, 2017 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., the undersigned Listers will meet at the Town Hall in Cavendish in said town, to hear grievances of persons, co-partnerships, associations or corporations aggrieved by any of their appraisals or by any of their acts as such Listers, whose objections thereto in writing shall have been filed with them as prescribed by statute, and to make such corrections in said abstract as shall upon hearing or otherwise be determined by them; and that unless cause to the contrary be shown, the contents of said abstract will, for the year 2016, become the Grand List of said town and each person, co-partnership, association or corporation therein named. Mack Molding Expands Molding Capability: A leading custom plastics molder and supplier of contract manufacturing services, Mack Molding is making significant capital equipment investments to expand its capacity and capabilities. A new injection molding press weighing more than 125 tons is being installed at the Cavendish plant. VT Journal
Congratulations to Jill’s Place and Singleton’s: The Black River Area Community Coalition recently visited retail stores who sell alcohol and tobacco products in Ludlow, Plymouth and Cavendish, as part of the Community Retailers Program. This initiative, which is sponsored by the Windsor County Prevention Partnership, recognizes retailers for selling tobacco and alcohol in ways that discourages underage use and minimizes the marketing impact on youth. Both Jill’s Place and Singleton’s received the highest recognition of Gold. VT Journal
VCF Gives Grant to TRSU for CTES: The Vermont Community Fund has awarded a Small and Inspiring Grant of $1,000 to the Two Rivers Supervisory Union for further landscaping of the lot next to the Cavendish Town Elementary School. The purpose of the award is to support work that builds communities. The elementary school principal, George Thomson, has taken the lead, working with a committee including school board member, town select board member and a local landscape architect, Tim Calabrese, ASLA. To date, the town Highway Department has contributed equipment and labor, and dozens of local gardeners have worked to make the streetscape beautiful. This project will provide summer part-time supervised landscaping work for young women who are residents of the Windsor County Youth Services House, using community members working with them as positive role models. In addition, it will provide expanded learning experiences for our elementary school children while addressing the needs of young women moving from adolescence to adulthood with significant challenges that grow out of their childhood trauma.
Towns Split Over School District Merger: During the Act 46 discussions with the members of the Twin River Supervisory Union (TRSU) , of which Cavendish is a member, representatives from Mt. Holly made it clear they wanted to be out of their arrangement with Ludlow and had no intention of sending their children to Green Mountain because of the considerable distance. Further, Ludlow was refusing to consider closing Black River High School (BRHS), since in a unified district there can be only one high school. Representatives from Cavendish that sat on the Act 46 committee stated that having Ludlow be part of the GM District, and not closing BRHS would have significantly raised taxes for Cavendish and the other participating towns. Consequently, the Green Mountain Unified School District was formed and approved by the state and the participating towns of Andover, Cavendish, Chester, and Baltimore. On May 30, Tuesday, Ludlow and Mt. Holly voted along town lines regarding the merger with the Mill River School District. Mt. Holly voted in favor (391 yes and 153 no) while Ludlow voted against the merger (245 yes and 527 no). Because the merger requires both towns to vote in favor of it, the process begins anew. The state Agency of Education will impose a merger on the towns if they do not come up with a plan in the given time frame.

Plans are underway for the Annual Plant Sale on July 2 (Saturday). On June 22, 7 pm Margo Caulfield will be doing a program at the Fletcher Memorial Library in Ludlow on Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn: The Writer Who Changed History. This is free and open to the public. You will be able to purchase books and have them signed at this event. FMI: 802-228-8921.
The Museum is now open for the season-Sundays 2-4 pm and by appointment at other times.
3. TOWN WIDE TAG SALE: With summer now underway, and before the kids are off for the summer, this is a good time to sort out items for the town wide tag sale. The sale, which takes place on July 30 (Saturday) will be from 9-2. 4. PICKLEBALL: Starting on Sunday June 4th at 10:00 a.m and continuing throughout the summer, Cavendish Recreation will be holding Pickleball in a round robin format on the CTES basketball court, or in the gym depending on weather. Pickleball is a game played on a smaller net and court than tennis with wooden or composite paddles. It is a combination of tennis, paddleball and ping-pong It is fun for all ages, but this program is geared toward seniors. Come on down and give it a try! 5. OPEN POETRY READING: On June 2, Friday, from 7-8:30 pm there will be Open Poetry Reading at Crows Corner Bakery on Depot Street in Proctorsville. Bring your own poetry, or read from a poet you admire. Bring one or two poems, or maybe more. The evening promises readers from Cavendish and beyond! Coffee, tea and treats available. B.Y.O.B. (and glasses, corkscrews etc) Please let us know if you want to read, or just show up. 6. RED SOX RAFFLE TICKETS TO BENEFIT GETHSEMANE CHURCH: Red Sox raffle tickets are for sale- $5 each or 6 for $20-to benefit Gethsemane Church. Choice of Baltimore August 26 or Cleveland, August 2. Both games have home plate seats. To purchase tickets- call Barbara Dickey (226-7187) or Mary Springer (484-7431); come by the church Sunday morning between 10:30 and 12:30. The drawing will be held July 15.
