ALERT: Dartmouth and UVM students will be working on ditches and culverts today and tomorrow in Cavendish and Ludlow. They will be on Chapman, Newton and upper Brook Rd areas. Please use caution if driving in those locations. NOTE: If you are in need of assistance with clearing culverts or ditches, a Culvert Crawlers team will be working on Green Up Day (May 3). 1. DRAFT SUBDIVISION REGULATIONS INFORMATIONAL MEETING 4/23 @ 6 PM. Planning Commission is holding an informational meeting on Wednesday, April 23 at 6:00 at the Proctorsville Fire Station, to discuss the latest draft Subdivision Regulations, which may be viewed at the town’s website. You can also pick up a copy at the Town Office. A Zoom option is available. Please visit the town website for the number.

2. SPRING CLEANING CAVENDISH STYLE: Whether your spring cleaning is well underway, or you're about to get started, chances are you’ll end up with stuff you want to get rid of. Check out A-Z Recycling provided by the Southern Windsor/Windham Solid Waste Management District to learn about what can be recycled or repurposed and where. It includes a number of resources you may not be aware of. In town, and nearby resources include the following:
Cavendish Transfer Station: Offering a variety of free recycling (including electronics and metals) and composting options, check out what to bring and associated costs for things like old refrigerators, tires etc.
Black River Good Neighbors Services (BRGNS): Providing a furniture store, food shelf, and thrift store, there are a variety of items that can be donated. It’s best to call ahead to see what they are in need of and to arrange for furniture pick up. 802-228-3663
Apparel Impact: They take all clothing, footwear, sheets and towels as well as accessories. All items must be dry, contain no odor or mold. Items DO NOT need to be in wearable condition. The closest box is near Spaulding’s Garage, 4700 route 103 in Chester.
Household Hazardous Waste: The Alva Waste Transfer Station, 1080 Charlestown Road, Springfield VT provides convenient access to dispose of HHW properly. Click here for a list of what is accepted. Call 802-674-9235 for more information and to make an appointment at least 24 hours in advance.
Town Wide Tag Sale: We will be seeking permission at Monday’s Select Board meeting for the use of the town greens. As always the sale is the last Saturday in July, the 26th from 9-2. More information will be in next week’s Update.
3. CAVENDISH RELATED NEWS
• Raid in Ludlow: On April 16, a raid took place at the Overlook apartments in Ludlow. Alexis Curry posted the following information on a Go Fund Me page, “My partner Gabriel was taken from out home at 6 am, with guns pointed at me and our daughter. They completely smashed down our door, leaving us terrified and shattered. Yesterday, the US Attorney’s Office, District of Vermont issued a press release stating that The United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Vermont stated that Gabriel Lopes Da Silva Santos, 27, of Brazil, has been charged by criminal complaint with illegal possession of a firearm by an alien unlawfully in the United States. According to court records, Santos illegally possessed an AR-15 style rifle on June 9, 2024, when law enforcement responded to an apartment complex in Ludlow, Vermont. A neighbor had reported that someone was shooting behind the complex. Law enforcement found Santos, who claimed ownership of the AR-15 style rifle and a shotgun that was also on scene. Law enforcement later discovered that Santos had overstayed his visa, which expired in September 2020. The United States Attorney’s Office emphasizes that the complaint contains allegations only and that Santos is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty. Santos faces up to 15 years of imprisonment if convicted.
• Grafton Village Cheese Sold to Vermont Farmstead Cheese : Grafton Village Cheese will continue to make cheese in Grafton and run its packing, shipping, cheese-smoking and retail location in Proctorsville. Its roughly 22 employees, including head cheesemaker Mariano Gonzalez, will join 13 who work for Vermont Farmstead Cheese. Both operations source milk largely from Vermont with a little coming from New Hampshire and New York. Seven Days
• Road Construction begins in Ludlow April 21: Motorists are advised to watch for construction personnel throughout the project limits on both Vermont Route 100 and Vermont Route 103. VT 103 within the project limits. The contractor will be conducting construction layout with a one or two man crew. Another subcontractor will also be conducting layout for permanent signs. Inspection staff will continue to retrieve road widths and stake out the projects. These activities will require construction personnel to access the shoulders and active travel lanes on VT 103, VT 100, and side streets. The Class 1 limits of the highway for Vermont Route 103 and Vermont Route 100 are scheduled to paved this construction season. The VT 103 segment begins just north of the Town Fire Station and continues for 1.5 miles to just south of Cota and Cota. Milling and paving operations on this portion of the project are scheduled to be done at night with hour and noise restrictions. The VT 100 portion of the project will be completed during the day and represents about 3/4 of a mile of the paved roadway from the intersection with VT 103 to approximately 600 feet south of the intersection with Hemingway Hill Road.

APRIL 19 (SATURDAY): FREE Easter Dinners cooked by members of the Ludlow and Proctorsville Fire Departments. 125 Dinners will be provided. They can be picked up on April 19 from 12-2 at the Ludlow Fire Department. The menu includes ham, potatoes, gravy, corn, roll and dessert.
