SPRING CLEAN YOUR MEDICINE CABINET: April 26th (Saturday) is National Drug Take Back Day. Time to clean out your medicine cabinet of both prescription and over the counter medications. There are two convenient locations, the Ludlow Pharmacy (57 Pond St) and the Ludlow Police Department (19 West Hill St). Chester and Springfield Police Departments and Springfield Pharmacy also have drop boxes. Note that Springfield Pharmacy will take liquids as well as pills and patches. 1.CAVENDISH SELECT BOARD MEETING 4/21: The monthly select Board (SB) meeting was held on Thursday April 21. The video of the meeting is available at the Okemo Valley TV Website. Unapproved minutes are at the Town Website.

Speed Limit in Proctorsville Village: SB member Sandra Russo, who lives in the village, made a motion for a 25 MPH speed limit. The motion was not seconded so did not pass. Chambers noted that the lights by the school are now working and the principal has been trained how to keep them operational.
Green Up Day: This will take place on May 3 (Saturday). See item 4 below
Culvert Crawlers: Students from the University of Vermont and Dartmouth came to the Black River Valley to work with Black River Action Team’s (BRAT) Culvert Crawlers program and Cavendish Connects. Two areas in Cavendish, that had damage from the ice storm, were cleared of downed limbs as well as maintenance work on culverts and ditches.
Paving: An RFP has been issued for repaving on Depot St. in Proctorsille and Quent Phelan Road.
Events Planning: Trevor Barlow, who owns the former Crows Corner building on Depot St in Proctorsville, talked to the board about a series of events he’d like to hold in an effort to bring more people into the area. Among the events would be a weekly Farmer’s Market on the Proctorsville Green, a 20 mile race through Cavendish this fall that would finish at his farm on Twenty Mile Stream, and four seasonal events.
ArtEscape: The Cavendish Historical Society, Cavendish Connects, the Cavendish Library and Trevor Barlow, a business owner and member of the Cavendish Community Fund (CCF) are seeking a VT Humanities Grant to hold a series of events throughout the year including a film series as well as art related workshops.
Commemorating America’s Semiquencentennial (250 years): While activities are underway honoring the 250th anniversary of the start of the American Revolutionary War, the Governor has asked all towns to plan activities for the anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 2026. Cavendish needs to decide how this will be celebrated.
2. APRIL SHOWERS BRING MAY FLOWERS WORKSHOP: Actually it was a snow storm, causing the cancellation of the Cavendish Historical Society’s (CHS) April Paper Flower workshop. To celebrate springtime, CHS has rescheduled the workshop for May 10, from 10-12 at the Cavendish Community Library in Proctorsville.
Participants can make a wide variety of flowers from various types of paper. Since the celebrations are now underway celebrating the 250th anniversary (Semiquincentennial) of the start of the Revolutionary War-Cavendish has many Patriots buried here-it’s a good time to learn how to make a wide array of red, white and blue flowers.
The workshop is free, open to the public with projects for all ages and abilities and has been made possible in part thanks to the Cavendish Community Fund. FMI: margocaulfield@icloud.com or 802-226-7807.
3. CAVENDISH 15TH ANNUAL TOWN WIDE TAG SALE: Can it really be our 15th year for the Town Wide Tag Sale? What started as a special event for the town’s 250th anniversary continues to be a great way to bring the town together.
As you continue, or begin spring cleaning, put aside items for the Annual Town Wide Tag Sale, which will take place on July 26 (Saturday) from 9-2. Space is available for free on both of the town greens for Cavendish residents, property owners and businesses, along with non-profit groups that serve the community.

4. CAVENDISH GREEN UP DAY/CULVERT & DITCH CHECK: For Green Up Day on Saturday May 3, there are two ways to participate:
• Sign up for your route at the Cavendish Town Office Entry Way and pick up a bag (or two). Make sure to fill in which routes you will be “greening.” You can do this at any time, even when the office is closed, until May 11.
• On May 3, meet at Svec Park (Proctorsville Green) starting at 9 am for a route, gloves and bags. As a thank you to volunteers, sandwiches and a beverage will be available at the Gazebo between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
Green Up bags can be taken for free to the Cavendish Transfer Station until May 11.
As you Green Up, please clean ditches of debris and check culverts. If you see a problem with a ditch or culvert, or find items too big to remove, call the Town Office 802-226-7291. If you need help cleaning a specific culvert or ditch, contact Black River Action Team (BRAT) for Culvert Crawler assistance. culvert.crawlers@gmail.com
Know before you go: Wear long pants, bright colors and good walking shoes. Tics are out so plan accordingly in your dress and repellants. Walk facing traffic and be aware of blind corners. Don’t let children handle needles or sharp objects.

• Congratulations to Aitana Seville and William Braucht: Cavendish residents and CTES 2024 grads, both Aitana and William are award winners. Aitana, a student at GMUHS, won first place in the Junior Division of the Vermont History Day as well as the Lost Mural and Little Jerusalem Prize for her paper "The Case of Mendez v. Westminster: How it Changed School Segregation and Civil Rights for Children of Mexican Descent.” Aitana heads to the National History Day competition in June. William, a student at Christ the King, took 2nd place at the National Civics Bee. He has progressed to the state level competition at the end of June which if can win that he will proceed as Vermont’s student representative (one student per state) to the national competition in Washington DC in November. • GMUSD Votes 2 Year Contract for CTES Acting Principal: VT Journal
• Edward (Skip) May 1933-2025: Edward E. May, better known to his friends and family as “Skip,” died unexpectedly at his home in Proctorsville, on Monday, April 7, 2025, just shy of his 92nd birthday. Many will remember him from the film “The Forgotten,” where he “had the last word.” A memorial will be held on May 1, at 1 p.m., at the Plain Cemetery, 131 Plains Cemetery Road in Perkinsville, followed by a small reception in Proctorsville.
• 67th Ludlow Rotary Penny Sale: Ludlow Rotary Club’s (LRC) 67th annual Penny Sale returns on Saturday, April 26, in the Ludlow Elementary School’s gymnasium, at 6 p.m.

• Quilt-Mapping Flood Recovery in VT: On Saturday, May 10th from 11-2 pm, the Mapping for Resilience research team will host a community quilt-mapping event for residents and people who work in the greater Black River Valley region at Fletcher Memorial Library in Ludlow. This event is being held to invite folks to connect and share memories, emotions, and stories around local flooding and recovery efforts. Participants will answer prompts about flooding and local communities, associate answers with fabric colors, and create personal patchworks. The event is hosted by the Mapping for Resilience research team based at Dartmouth College and Colorado School of Mines who have been studying the social, ecological, and technical challenges of 2023 flooding. While this is a free event, registering would be much appreciated, as we will provide some food and childcare for attendees.
